Background of the study
Globalization has accelerated cultural and linguistic exchange, exerting profound effects on language structures. In Northern Nigeria, the Hausa language is experiencing significant morphological changes as a result of increased contact with global languages, particularly English. Traditional morphological processes such as complex inflection and derivation are being streamlined in many contexts, partly due to the influence of standardized global communication norms (Adebayo, 2023). Globalization facilitates the rapid spread of new lexical items and morphological innovations, which are integrated into Hausa speech through borrowing, calquing, and reanalysis. This dynamic interplay between traditional Hausa morphology and external linguistic elements leads to a gradual erosion of certain native morphological patterns while simultaneously introducing new forms. Field observations suggest that urban Hausa speakers are particularly susceptible to these changes due to higher exposure to international media and education systems (Okeke, 2024). By examining both rural and urban speech samples, this study aims to map out the morphological shifts induced by globalization and assess their impact on language complexity and identity (Uche, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite observable changes in Hausa morphology, there is limited empirical research on the specific impacts of globalization on these processes. Preliminary evidence indicates that globalization contributes to morphological simplification and innovation; however, systematic data on the frequency and nature of these changes remain sparse (Adebayo, 2023). This gap hinders the development of targeted language preservation strategies and complicates efforts to reconcile traditional Hausa linguistic features with modern influences. Without a comprehensive understanding of these global effects, language planning initiatives may fail to address the erosion of indigenous morphological structures (Okeke, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To document morphological changes in Hausa attributable to globalization.

To compare rural and urban morphological patterns.

To evaluate the impact of external influences on traditional structures.

Research questions:

How has globalization affected Hausa morphological processes?

What differences exist between rural and urban Hausa morphology?

Which global influences most significantly alter traditional patterns?

Research Hypotheses:

Globalization leads to morphological simplification in Hausa.

Urban speakers exhibit more pronounced changes than rural speakers.

Exposure to international media correlates with increased morphological innovation.

Significance of the study:
The study offers critical insights into how globalization reshapes Hausa morphology, informing language planning and educational policies. Its findings will help balance modern influences with the preservation of traditional linguistic features (Adebayo, 2023; Uche, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The research is confined to morphological changes in Hausa due to globalization in Northern Nigeria and does not extend to other linguistic domains.

Definitions of terms:

Globalization: The process of increasing international connectivity and cultural exchange.

Morphological Changes: Alterations in the structure and formation of words.

Hausa: A Chadic language predominantly spoken in Northern Nigeria.
